Welcome to the third lesson on how to read the Quran in Arabic using the famous Noorani Qaida (نوراني قاعدة) booklet.
In this lesson you will be introduced to your first vowel.
Fatha – Short “A” Vowel
You should remember from earlier lessons that Arabic letters do not contain any vowels.
Arabic vowels are actually marks that appear on the top or bottom of the letters.
So in Arabic, if you were to write the word “Lala”, you would write it as: “LL”.
The first vowel is called fatha and it is equivalent to a short “A”.
Note, a fatha is one line drawn on top of an Arabic letter, see the video for examples.
So using our “Lala” example you would draw a fatha on top of each “L” and that would give it a “A” vowel sound.
L + (Fatha on Top) = La
How to Study this Lesson?
When you master the sound each Arabic letter makes with a fatha on it, then move on to the 2nd part of the lesson.
Now lets take the first box on the second part of the lesson. It contains the Arabic letters: “B” “L” and “Gh” and since each letter has a fatha on it, you will add a short “A” after each letter.
BLGH (No vowels)
B + Fatha = Ba
L + Fatha = La
Gh + Fatha = Gha
All together = BaLaGha
On a separate sheet of paper try to do this for each box in this lesson. Then watch the video to see whether you get it right or not.
