Welcome to the seventeenth lesson on how to read the Quran in Arabic using the famous Noorani Qaida (نوراني قاعدة) booklet.
In this lesson we will be introduced to the shaddah.
What is a Shaddah?
Remember saakin? (If you don’t, don’t tell me, just quietly go back to the saakin lesson 😐 )
Well shaddah (looks like a “W”) is a connector like the saakin except +1. (+1 means, it is like the saakin, plus some more..yes I’m trying my best to confuse you 🙂 )
An Arabic letter with a shaddah on it is actually made up of two of the same letters, for example:
Laam Shaddah is
(a)First Laam with a saakin on it
(b)Second Laam with whatever vowel accompanies the shaddah on the letter
Example:
Look at the first word (Top Right) of the second part of the lesson.
Saad with a Fatha
daal with a shaddah – fatha
Qaaf with a fatha
So:
Saad + fatha = Saa
daal – Broken into two parts because of the shaddah
daal #1 – has a saakin and the Saa connects to it, so you have the sound “Sad”
daal #2 – has a fatha and it gives the daal the “da” sound
(So far the word sounds “Sad-da)
Qaaf + fatha = Qa
All together = Sad-da-Qa
That is the best I can explain in words, watch the video…
